NINTH RUSHES SOHO SHORTS FESTIVAL AT CURZON SOHO AND CURZON MAYFAIR
Rushes Soho Shorts Festival (from 28 July - 3 Aug throughout Soho) is
renowned for its not-for-profit status and it's championing of emerging
young talent. Curzon Soho is the delegate centre, and as such will have
information of the many screenings, tours and events throughout the
week, many of which are free.
Curzon Cinemas are hosting a post-production masterclass from the London
Film Academy, a discussion on music video curated by Halloween (the team
behind the London Short Film Festival - in its fifth year at Curzon Soho
in January), and the premiere of the unique straight 8 challenge: 'one
super 8mm cartridge, no editing'.
Festival advocates in the past have included Ray Winstone and Bill
Nighy. This year Rushes Soho Shorts is thrilled to welcome Geraldine
James and Nick Broomfield as festival spokespeople.
Halloween presents The Future of Music Video
Tuesday 31st July, 5:30pm / Curzon Soho / £6.50
With filmmaking becoming easier by the day via digital techniques and
cheaper equipment, the days of the overblown overpriced music video are
now well over. We present representatives from both ends of the scale,
from directors and commissioners working with chart names to
representatives from smaller labels such as Transgressive Records, who
deal with new rising artistes and non-mainstream acts.
This will be followed by Shooting People Music Video Network open-access
video night. One can bring music videos on DVD to be screened. Just turn
up on the night.
London Film Academy Masterclass: Post Production/Visual Effects
Tuesday 31st July, 7pm / Curzon Soho / £6.50
This masterclass will offer guidance on how to create professional post
production visual effects on a low budget. It will be delivered by
David Hilton (worked on several James Bond films), David Barnard
(Mirrormask) and special effects expert Alan Marques (Goldeneye, Seven
Years in Tibet).
This will be followed by Shooting People Music Video Network open-access
video night. Bring your own music videos on DVD format to be screened...
Just turn up on the night and join the queue!
straight 8 PREMIERES
Sunday 29th July, 4:30pm / Curzon Mayfair / £7
Monday 30th July, 6:30pm / Curzon Mayfair / £7
'straight 8' puts filmmakers into the unusual position of seeing their
own rushes at exactly the same time as the audience. In an event devised
to get people to shoot films instead of just talking about it, directors
are set an inventive and excuse-free challenge to create a mini-masterpiece.
Filmmakers do not see the film until it screens in front of a huge
audience. "There are no other film screenings that I know of where the
audience sits with the directors, actors and crew to watch their film for the first time" says straight 8 founder Ed Sayers. "Apart from
looking at the film through a viewfinder they haven't seen their work
yet. Watching your film this way feels like both the fastest and slowest
three minutes of your life at the same time." http://www.straight8.net
